Public spaces connect us, inspire us and make us healthier and happier.

Through the NSW Government's Public Spaces Legacy Program Council received $1,330,000 for the Tumut Rotary Pioneer Park Masterplanning and Upgrade Project. The funding agreement specified the following elements be included: provision of additional green infrastructure and nature based play spaces, construction of a new amenities building, improved pathways and more picnic and seating areas .

Masterplanning

Creating a masterplan for Pioneer Park will shape how the space is developed for future generations. Community feedback gathered at our park pop-up in December 2021, online survey results and discussions with key user groups has been incorporated into the final Masterplan which has now been endorsed by Council. Click here to view masterplan.

Not everything detailed in the masterplan is included in stage one, but having the plan allows us to have a considered and staged approach to improvements as funding becomes available.

Funded Stage one upgrades include:

  • New accessible amenities building, to be located near the pool carpark and raised above flood level
  • New nature-based play spaces to cater for younger children
  • Improved pathways – new accessible pathway to amenities and shelter
  • Improved walking paths down near the river – raised above low flood level
  • New bridges into park
  • Low maintenance plantings and more seating and picnic tables
  • Solar lighting from the racecourse to Riverglade Caravan Park

Stage one upgrades were completed in early 2024 and opening celebrations will be held at 4pm on Tuesday 26 March 2024.

Pioneer Park has been buzzing with activity, here's the latest update:

    • Rework of the walking path at the river end near the park’s Labyrinth is complete but access to the path remains closed to give the turf time to regenerate.
    • Playground areas have been excavated and new concrete edgings, that double as riding paths, have been built around the play spaces.
    • All existing play equipment will stay with the addition of a new slide connecting the highest play area to the lower level and the damaged rope climbing castle will be replaced.
    • The boulders from the rock circle have been relocated across the path and will form the basis of a nature play area with the addition of local recycled timbers.
    • Concrete formwork has been laid for the path that will connect the Elm Drive park entrance to the new toilets (see photo).

Project update - it's been a busy couple of weeks since the project started:

    • The banks around the pond have been excavated in preparation for native plantings.
    • Playground areas have been excavated in preparation for new edgings.
    • Sections of the concrete walking paths have been excavated.
    • Walking path at the river end near the labyrinth has been raised about low flood level and re-concreted.
    • Large tree from Lions Junction Park Tumut has been relocated to the new nature play section.

The walking path from the Elm Drive carpark to the River Walk is open. Park users are asked to keep an eye out as heavy machinery moves around the site and stay behind the security fencing.

Work has started on the Rotary Pioneer Park upgrades. Preliminary works will focus on improving green infrastructure around the pondage section of the park.

Security fencing has been installed around the work zone while we work to safely complete construction.

The walking path from the river past the labyrinth to the playground will be closed for a short time and we encourage users to use the alternate path closer to the pool.
The project includes new amenities, to be located near the pool carpark, nature play facilities catering for younger children, improved pathways, new bridges, low maintenance plantings and more seating and picnic tables.
