FUNDING

The Australian Government committed $17.4 million in funding the Brindabella Road Upgrade project in the October 2022-23 Budget, under the Infrastructure Investment Program. In January 2023, the Australian Government committed an additional $20 million towards the project, taking its total commitment to $37.4 million.

THE PROJECT

The upgrade will begin with a 10.6 km priority section between the Piccadilly Circus intersection at the NSW/ACT border and Brindabella Valley Road to the west. This is the final section of the road within our local government area (shown in blue below).

Works will transform this stretch from a substandard gravel road into a fully sealed two-lane road, including improved drainage, signage and associated safety features.

A further 17.4 km stretch (marked in blue below), from west of the Goodradigbee River to the Ridge Road intersection, will be surveyed to support future planning. The survey may also identify fill opportunities and potential upgrades. Any improvements to this section will depend on available funding.

STATUS

Detailed designs and supporting documentation have been approved by the Federal Government, with construction scheduled to begin in September 2026. Timing has been set to avoid winter, as the site’s location and weather conditions limit construction activities during the colder months.

Council awarded the Survey and Design Tender to Rigore Engineering Services following a competitive tender process.

2023 MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR PROJECT

In 2023, $3 million from the NSW Government’s Fixing Local Roads Fund helped make a 10 km stretch of Brindabella Road from the Goodradigbee River to Piccadilly Circus wider and safer.

Works included widening the road by up to four metres in some spots, stabilising steep edges, repairing pavement, improving curves, installing safety barriers, maintaining drainage, trimming vegetation, and updating signage.

These upgrades mean safer travel for all road users, including heavy vehicles, and were completed by December 2023.

    5 February 2026

Following the appointment of Rigore Engineering Services in December 2024 to undertake the road survey and detailed design, Council has been working closely with the project team to progress the next stage of planning.

While some delays were experienced during the development of the detailed designs, all design work has now been finalised. The complete package, along with all required supporting documentation, has been submitted to the Federal Government for assessment and approval.

Subject to this approval, construction is now expected to commence in September 2026.

This is a complex, multi-million-dollar project involving multiple approval authorities and key stakeholders. We appreciate the community’s continued patience and understanding as the project progresses.
