Batlow Cannery Site Business Case

Background

Consultation with the community identified the improvement of the derelict former Cannery site as a priority project for Batlow. The 2.5 hectare industrial site operated as the Mountain Maid Cannery up until the early 2000’s. Since its closing, the property has sat idle with a number of large industrial buildings falling into a poor state of repair.

Funding of $500,000 from the NSW Government's Major Projects Infrastructure Fund enabled Council to purchase the Cannery in 2018. The remainder of this funding will be used to undertake targeted demolition of unusable structures and clean up the site by December 2019.

The Project

Additional funding of $200,000 was allocated from the second round of the NSW Government's Stronger Communities Fund to develop a business case to identify and evaluate a range of improvement opportunities for the former Batlow Cannery site.

The Cannery building provides a unique opportunity to create a food and beverage experience with strong links to the local produce history of the region.

In November 2018 Council invited expressions of interest from businesses that will contribute to economic growth in the area and create new employment opportunities for the residents of Batlow. Council received several innovative proposals from commercial entities wishing to actively redevelop the site.

The Batlow Cannery site business case is to be completed by 30 June 2020.
