Consultation has concluded

Background

Consultation with the community identified the improvement of the derelict former Cannery site as a priority project for Batlow. The 2.5 hectare industrial site operated as the Mountain Maid Cannery up until the early 2000’s. Since its closing, the property sat idle with a number of large industrial buildings falling into a poor state of repair.

The Project

Funding of $500,000 secured from the NSW Government's Major Projects Infrastructure Fund enabled Council to purchase the Cannery in 2018. The remainder of this funding will be used to undertake targeted demolition of unusable structures and clean up the site.

The site was bushfire impacted in January 2020 and required additional works. The demolition and additional clean-up was completed in April 2020.

Take a look at this short video to see how the demolition progressed.

Demolition works are set to get underway this week at the disused Batlow Cannery site.

As part of the priority project to improve the site, Snowy Valleys Council has engaged a licenced contractor to demolish unusable structures and clear the area.

The scope of works includes a general site clean-up and removal of surface asbestos. It does not extend to removing the existing fencing, concrete slabs, hardstands or levelling the site.
