Multipurpose and Evacuation Centre

The Tumut Multipurpose and Evacuation Centre (MEC) has been completed, with the doors officially opened to the community on 3 September 2026.

Located at the Russell Street end of Richmond Park, the new centre is a modern, purpose-built facility designed to support the everyday needs of the community while strengthening the Snowy Valleys’ resilience during emergencies.

Construction commenced in September 2025, following Council’s decision in August 2025 to award the construction contract.

The centre features two indoor multipurpose courts suitable for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, pickleball and cricket training, spectator viewing stands, male and female amenities and change areas, a reception area, indoor café space, significant emergency storage, landscaped areas and off-street parking for 50 vehicles.

The flexible facility provides a new home for local and regional indoor sporting competitions, while also offering space for conferences, school programs, community gatherings and events. It has also been designed to serve as an evacuation centre during emergencies.

The $13.8 million project was jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments under the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.
