Snowy Valleys Council is developing a Crime Prevention Strategy with the aim of promoting a collaborative approach to crime prevention and safety across the Snowy Valleys region.
A safe community is a place that is attractive to live, work, visit, do business and move around. Opinions of community safety impact on the way people feel and interact in their community.
To develop this strategy we will be collaborating with key stakeholders including police, government agencies, local businesses, a wide range of community groups and many others to help develop a clear picture of the crime-related issues that affect us most. It is through a collaborative approach that the most successful crime prevention outcomes will be achieved.
A crime prevention strategy comprises a crime profile and an action plan.
There are five key stages in the development of a crime prevention strategy:
Developing a crime profile - A crime profile will allow a clear idea of the types of crime affecting our area and help us to determine what type of crime will be the focus of our strategy. A crime profile is developed using Police statistics and data.
Researching crime prevention approaches - Gain insights into other factors that contribute to the incidence of the crime in the area. Use desk-top research to look at best-practice strategies and approaches to crime prevention used in other towns and regions.
Negotiating support -Once all the information is gathered we will start to identify the actions and steps we can take to keep our community safe. We will research the approaches used in other regions and towns to see which strategies are most effective in preventing crime. We will work closely with our community partners to identify possibilities and draft the plan.
Developing an action plan - The draft action plan will identify key priority areas and specific actions and activities to focus on.
Implementing and monitoring the crime prevention strategy
We expect to have the draft plan finished by December. We’ll then make it available here, so that everyone can have a say. We’d love to hear from you.
