Growth through innovation - sustainable tourism

Background

This project is one of three Government supported pilot projects in NSW involving closure of a disused public railway for conversion to a rail trail for recreational use.

The rail trail from Tumbarumba to Rosewood will be the first for NSW and is slated to deliver a vibrant, revitalized corridor for walking and cycling in the Snowy Valleys region.

The Trail

Approximately 22km in length, the trail will run between Albury Street, Tumbarumba and McEachern Lane,
Rosewood.

There are two proposed trail heads. The first is the Tumbarumba heritage listed landmark 'Wolters Cottages' and the second is located in the centre of Rosewood at the local park. Both trail heads have facilities for parking and toilets.

The trail will be designed to be enjoyed by walkers, runners, and cyclists, with the sealed surface also allowing access for prams, wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

High quality interpretative and informative signage will be installed to tell a range of stories
related to historical, environmental and agricultural interest. Seating, picnic facilities and amenities
will also be provided.

The Project

About a third of the proposed trail is located within public road reserves, with about two thirds located within/adjacent to parcels of private land. About 0.8km is located outside the corridor along the footpaths of public roads at the Tumbarumba end.

The project involves converting the original rail corridor into a 2.5m wide trail with a sealed surface, contained within a fenced corridor.

It is proposed to remove the rails and sleepers and construct a sealed surface, while maintaining/restoring other railway artifacts including bridges, signs and station infrastructure.

Council received funding of $5,700,000 for the project under the State Government’s Restart NSW Regional Tourism Infrastructure fund and Round Two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities grants.

A boundary survey of the full rail trail corridor and a detailed feature survey of the corridor are on track to be delivered to Council by the end of November.

Snowy Valleys Council Acting Director Assets and Infrastructure Heinz Kausche said he was pleased with the progress of the survey and that progress was on track as planned.

“The physical survey tasks were finished at the end of October and once the full survey documents are delivered work can commence on the trail design,” Mr Kausche said.
