Council is developing a masterplan for upgrades to Adelong’s Main Street, funded by the NSW Office of Local Government’s Severe Weather and Flood Grant. The masterplan will focus on improving drainage, safety, streetscape design and overall usability, and will support future grant applications to deliver construction works.

Following the appointment of a design consultant in November 2025, site visits and stakeholder consultation were held in December. Feedback has helped shape key priorities including drainage solutions, pedestrian safety, road layout, heritage character, planting, lighting and public realm improvements.

The draft masterplan and concept design will be presented to the community in March, with a final design expected to be adopted by Council in mid-2026.

FUNDING

Council has received a $115,000 grant from the NSW Office of Local Government’s Severe Weather and Flood Grant program, with the project scheduled for completion by the end of June 2026 under the current funding arrangements.

    15 January 2026

A design consultant was appointed in November 2025 following an RFQ process, with site visits and stakeholder meetings held in December to help shape the concept design.

Feedback from stakeholders highlighted several key priorities for the masterplan, including:

    • Drainage: fixing ageing infrastructure, managing stormwater from laneways and reducing localised flooding.

    • Road layout and safety: safer pedestrian crossings, better speed management, fewer access conflicts and ensuring the street works for larger vehicles.

    • Streetscape design: a preference for kerb islands, clear pedestrian movement, hardy planting and tree species that don’t cause ongoing infrastructure issues.

    • Heritage and character: using local materials, respecting the heritage precinct and reflecting Adelong’s multicultural history without leaning too heavily on gold rush themes.

    • Streetscape improvements: opportunities for public art, better lighting that aligns with dark sky principles, and landscaping that reflects the town’s strong connection to the creek.

    • Services and future-proofing: exploring options to underground services and potential opportunities for EV charging.

Next up… the draft masterplan and concept design will be shared with the community in February. There’ll be a chance to check out the designs, have a chat with the designers and Council staff, and share feedback.

After that, the final design will go on public exhibition before being presented to Council for adoption in mid-2026.

    6 November 2024

Local representatives from the Adelong recently met on-site with Council’s Project Manager and Cr James Hayes to discuss the masterplan, which will combine landscape architecture and engineering. This plan will allow Council to apply for future grant funding to complete construction.

The Stakeholder Group expressed strong support and is keen to move the project to a shovel-ready stage. Key streetscape elements shaped by local input will include safety improvements, drainage, finishes, public art, and landscaping.

Community members interested in joining the Adelong Stakeholder Group can contact Project Manager Phillip McMurray at 1300 275 782.
